Cleveland District State High School promotes the all-round development of students by providing a wide range of academic, cultural and sporting opportunities.
Junior School
The school is a recognised leader in Middle Schooling and has strong ties with Primary Schools in the District.  The emphasis in the Middle School is on student engagement, the building of strong relationships and laying the foundations for life-long learning. Our aim is for students to feel safe, welcome and successful in their new high school environment. The smooth transition from primary to secondary school is seen as a priority.
Junior School Curriculum
The Year 8 curriculum has been designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to experience a wide range of subjects in a caring and supportive environment.   The school offers a number of extension classes (and scholarships) - Academic, Music and Sport. Year 8 students study the following: English, History, Geography, Science which includes Agriculture, Health and Physical Education, LOTE (French, Japanese or Chinese), Home Economics, Manual Arts, Music, Art. Students involved in the extension programs may be required to attend classes before or after school.  All extension classes have extra LOTE classes.
All Year 9 students study eight subjects.  In order to keep their future options open, all students study five core subjects and then select three elective subjects. Core Subjects include: English, Maths, Science or Agricultural Science, History, Geography, Health and Physical Education. Elective Subjects include: Agricultural Mechanics, Ancient History, Animal Husbandry, Art, Business Computing, Business Principles, Chinese, Craft, Dance, French, Graphics, Home Economics, Japanese, Music, Popular Music Studies, Practical Cookery, Technology Studies, Science Research and Technology, Speech and Drama, Technology Wood, Technology Metal.
Senior Phase of Learning
A wide range of academic and vocational subjects are offered in the senior years to cater for all of the needs of our students. Year 10 students undertake a curriculum structure that aligns with educational initiatives which incorporate Year 10 in the Senior School. All year 10 students study English, Maths and HPE as well as four elective subjects. All subjects studied in Year 10 lead directly into subjects offered in Years 11 and 12, thus giving the students the opportunity to experience the demands of the subject before they commit to it in Year 11 and 12.
Year 11 and 12 students work a flexible timetable (four day week).  Students may undertake University study, TAFE programs, School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships or private study on their options day.
Students may also apply to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Years 10 – 12.  This program of study is academically rigorous and provides excellent preparation for University entrance both here and overseas.  For more information, please see the Senior Secondary page of this website or click on this link to go directly to the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s website:
