Teaching and learning

Cleveland District State High School has been involved in a review of pedagogical practice – in short, what we teach and how we teach it. This has involved research into “best practice” teaching and learning frameworks as well as the inclusion of Education Queensland imperatives such as QCAR and the National Curriculum. As a result of this research, we have adopted the Dimensions of Learning (DoL) model of teaching and learning, originally developed in the USA but increasingly being adopted and adapted to Australian educational environments. Many schools (both public and private) in Queensland alone have embraced the philosophy DoL espouses when considering the cognitive processes involved in rich and authentic classroom experiences. The DoL framework places a strong emphasis upon the deliberate development and use of complex reasoning processes (or higher-order thinking). However, in so doing it does not overlook the importance of the environment in which learning occurs as well as the role played in the process by learners themselves.
