Gifted students

The Gifted and talented programme continues to provide students with exciting opportunities for growth. At Cleveland District State High School, students are invited to participate in a range of academic extra-curricular activities.

In 2015 Cleveland District State High School  launched the Ignite Student program, an exciting educational program aimed at high-performing students in the core curriculum areas of Mathematics, Science and English.

Catering to the top 10% of  students in grades seven, eight and nine Ignite is founded on theoretical research on giftedness and aims to provide high-performing students with opportunities to extend themselves. Students are chosen based on a rigorous identification process designed to select the best and brightest of Cleveland District State High School.

This elite group of students will participate in after-school workshops designed to extend them beyond the realms of the classroom. They will work with like-minded peers, participate in extra-curricular activities, and have the opportunity to be mentored. Parents will also receive a newsletter which will report on the program and also feature information on catering to the needs of high-achieving students. Students will also be invited to attend various excursions and evenings throughout the year.

All students at Cleveland District State High school are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. Participation in these activities helps students to improve their team work skills, problem solving abilities, time management and critical and creative thinking. Academic extra-curricular activities that students have been involved with include:

  • Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition
  • Queensland Debating Union Secondary School competition
  • Aurecon Bridge Building Challenge
  • ICT Young Explorers
  • Readers Cup
  • Premier’s Reading Challenge
