Students with a disability

A Student Support Service (SSS) operates within the school. It provides Individual Curriculum Plans (ICP’s) and Individual Support Programs (ISP’s) for students with a range of verified disabilities.

Our mission is to develop young people who live life honestly, completely and compassionately while making a positive impact on those they meet. We wish to foster individuals with active and creative minds, a sense of understanding and empathy for others and the courage to act on their beliefs. We stress the total development of each individual: spiritual, moral, social, emotional, physical and intellectual.

The SSS team is designated for:

  • Intellectual Disability (ID)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Speech-Language Impairment (SLI)  
However, the Unit also offers AVT support students with
  • Hearing Impairment (HI) 
  • Vision Impairment (VI) 
  • Physical Impairment (PI)
The SSS runs on a maximized integration policy and Individual Curriculum Plans (ICP’s) are developed, monitored and reviewed for each student working in the unit. Educational programs for students will differ but include the opportunity for inclusion in mainstream classes and access to specialised classes within the SSS unit. Provision for students to be withdrawn from one or more lines of their timetable is negotiated.

Support may also include, but is not necessarily limited to:

  • Modified timetables where appropriate 
  • Subject modification (including assessment) where appropriate 
  • Test reading assistance where necessary 
  • Assistance with organizational / personal skills
Inclusive strategies to support students with specific learning needs or disabilities include:
  • Timing allowed for assessment Scheduling of assessment Setting for assessments and learning
  • Presentation of assessments and subject matter
  • Response type for assessments  
Our Unit is located in the recently renovated Block C and has updated resources and facilities, including interactive white boards, kitchen, laundry, disability accessible shower and toilet and a mini-computer lab. Specialist teachers provide programs and advice for parents and teachers in an inclusive setting.

Transition programs are run each year for the students coming from local Primary schools. These occur during Term 4 and include visits by our staff to the primary school and half day visits by the students to school in order to decrease anxiety for the start of Year 7.
